THAILAND ASSURES NO TSUNAMI IN SIGHT
The National Disaster Warning Centre (NDWC) assured provincial residents on the Andaman coast that there has been no sign of tsunami in Thailand despite some moderate and powerful aftershocks on Thursday morning. In an interview to Thai News Agency Thursday morning, NDWC Chairman Smith Dhammasarote told people in six provinces on Thailand’s southwestern coast to stay calm in light of a powerful earthquake that shook western Indonesia on Wednesday and some aftershocks later. According to a US report, an aftershock measuring 8.4 on the Richter scale and several minor aftershocks were detected near Sumatra islands. Smith said the NDWC has closely monitored the situation and affirmed that the NDWC would be able to issue a tsunami warning at least one to one and a half hours in advance if an earthquake occurs near Sumatra islands, and 45 minutes ahead if it occurs near Nicobar islands or the Bay of Bengal. He said warnings by some international agencies on Wednesday which specified the local time when tsunami would hit Thailand’s southern provinces of Phang-nga and Phuket had caused confusions among people. Many residents evacuated to higher grounds and were too scare to come down, he said. Meanwhile, the Associated Press reported that a powerful earthquake shook western Indonesia for the second straight day Thursday, collapsing buildings in a coastal city and triggering tsunami alerts. The morning jolt was also felt in Malaysia and Singapore where tall buildings swayed. On Wednesday, a strong earthquake shook Southeast Asia, collapsing buildings, killing at least five people and injuring dozens in Indonesia. Nations as far away as Africa put coastal areas on alert after the jolt but only a small, nondestructive tsunami hit Sumatra.
